Initially started in 2015 with Comet's rescue, Evanescent Mustang Rescue & Sanctuary officially became a 501(c)3 charity organization on March 30, 2017. Lakota (above) was the first Mustang rescued under our non-profit status. Our sanctuary has 15 acres of pasture & hay field, a quarantine area and a paddock for separating newcomers. We are lucky to have multiple reliable foster homes across the U.S., which has allowed us to rescue well over 1,000, yes ONE THOUSAND, Mustangs and Burros since becoming an official charity!
What is Evanescent? (Pronounced Eh van Eh scent) The definition of evanescent is "vanishing, fleeting: as, the pleasures and joys of life are evanescent." In other words, when we started it was assumed we would only be needed for a short amount of time. Well, as you can see by the number of Mustangs and Burros we've rescued and taken in, fleeting is definitely not the case.
Evanescent Mustang Rescue and Sanctuary was created for the prevention of animal cruelty through educating the public about horse care and safety. We are dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of captive Mustangs and Burros that have been abused, neglected, or are in danger of going to slaughter. The program is designed to offer them a safe place to heal from trauma and prepare them to be adopted into a permanent home.
Our goal is to acquire more land for the Sanctuary Mustangs and Burros. More land will allow the seniors or difficult to adopt equines a place to live out their lives in peace.
Most recently, Evanescent is cutting back on rescues and concentrating more on advancing our therapy programs - see below for more information.
Mustangs & War Horses is an experiential therapeutic program set up for a total of 10 two hour sessions (total of 20 hours per client) creating a more powerful experience for each participant. Rather than talking with a therapist in an office, this program offers an outdoor setting combining trauma-focused psychotherapists, equine specialists and rescued Evanescent
Mustangs/Burros with War Horses (Veterans/1st Responders) in small groups or family units who are battling a variety of issues, including depression, anxiety and PTSD.
The rescued Mustangs that are chosen for this program are at different stages of healing to offer a unique opportunity for War Horses to continue on their healing journey together. Horses are honest, intuitive, and will call out any BS brought into the arena, but mustangs who have been through their own trauma take it to a higher level for deeper healing to occur. M&W is designed to help reduce trauma responses while learning self-regulation, mindfulness, boundaries, confidence and trust building. Psychotherapists assist the War Horses in recognizing their triggers, emotional responses and releasing toxic trauma they may be holding onto.
The initial sessions are focused on trust building while evaluating their horse knowledge and comfort level, which will include basic horse care and groundwork exercises (horse behaviors, grooming, leading equine) before moving on to the next step of deeper therapeutic work with the mustangs. Participants in the program may graduate after their first course or request to return for another 10 week course (or as a volunteer to help others).
Each sponsorship provides care towards the mental health of Texoma Veterans/1 st Responders
(War Horses) through Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy and the mustangs/burros used in the
program! Sessions may include family members! Please use the contact form below, if you're interested in sponsoring a veteran!
Your support and contributions will enable us to both save more Mustangs & Burros OR help fund feeding, vet care, farrier and all things that come with caring for equines. Every dollar helps!
