MISSION STATEMENT:
Evanescent Mustangs is dedicated to the rescue, rehab, and rehoming of at risk mustangs and burros in the greater Texoma area. Permanent residents at the sanctuary in Sherman, TX offer assistance in the healing of 1st Responder and Veteran families through Mustangs & WarHorses, an Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy program in collaboration with Texoma Line Counseling, a group of dedicated therapists who were previously 1st Responders or Veterans themselves.
Evanescent Mustang Sanctuary, initially established as an LLC in May 2015 with the rescue of Haley’s Comet, was created with the intention of rescuing, rehabbing, and rehoming mustangs and burros at risk of going to slaughter.
Evanescent Mustang Rescue & Sanctuary (dba Evanescent Mustangs) became a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in May 2017, with the mission expanding to include therapeutic Evanescent Mustang Assisted Psychotherapy programs. These programs are designed for mustangs and burros, who are healing from their own traumas, who can assist in the healing process for individuals and families in the greater Texoma area.
WHO WE ARE:
Our sanctuary consists of 15 acres of pasture, Cassie’s Corner where we can separate senior mustangs for feeding, and a paddock for Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy. We are fortunate to have multiple reliable foster homes that have allowed us to rescue well over 1,000, yes ONE THOUSAND, Mustangs and Burros since becoming an official charity!
What is Evanescent? (Pronounced Eh van Eh scent) The definition of evanescent is "vanishing, fleeting: as, the pleasures and joys of life are evanescent." In other words, when we started it was assumed we would only be needed for a short amount of time.
As you can see by the number of Mustangs and Burros we've rescued and taken in, fleeting is definitely not the case. We have had to step back from adding any more equines to our herd, but hope to be able to take in a few more as we have room in the years to come.

During the last 9 years, Evanescent Mustangs grew into one of the largest mustang focused rescues, helping over 1,000 at risk mustangs and burros across the U.S. As Founder, Executive Director of the rescue and a Licensed Professional Counselor, Candace's dream was to help families in Texoma heal alongside rescued mustangs and burros through Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy.
Over the last few years, more rescues began focusing on helping mustangs, so we have been able to go back to the beginning by helping mustangs, burros and humans in our community.
We have created two special therapeutic programs to offer a deeper level of healing for humans and equine:
- Mustangs & WarHorses for Veterans/1st Responders (see more details below)
- Jessi's Promise - We believe that all kids should know the love of a horse. We offer a safe space, showing kindness and patience while pairing teens with mustangs that can teach connection and healing at a much deeper level. Conducted mainly at our Lawton, OK location.

Mustangs and War Horses - Veterans & 1st Responders
Our therapy program:
M&W is a specialized Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) program for Texoma Veterans and 1st Responders. This experiential therapeutic group is a collaboration with Texoma Line Counseling offering a 5-week program with 90-minute sessions creating a powerful experience for participants. Rather than talking one-on-one with a therapist in an office, this program offers an outdoor setting combining trauma-focused psychotherapists and rescued Evanescent Mustangs & Burros with War Horses (Veterans/1st Responders) in small groups or family units who are battling a variety of issues, including depression, anxiety and PTSD.
Each of the equine in our program are at different levels of healing in order to help participants no matter what level of trauma they start the program with.
M&W is designed to help reduce trauma responses while learning self-regulation, mindfulness, boundaries, confidence and trust building. Psychotherapists assist the War Horses in recognizing their triggers, emotional responses and releasing toxic trauma they may be holding onto.
September 1 - 19, 2024, Evanescent is participating in North Texas Giving Day where each sponsorship provides care towards the mental health of Texoma Veterans & 1st Responders (War Horses) through Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy and the mustangs/burros used in the program!
